After writing so many books and articles on "The Philosophy
of the Buddha", we are now back to square one: Why should one
embrace Buddhism and cultivation?
The idea of learning Buddhism has never even occurred to most people.
Why does one need to cultivate? If someone is alive, they're alive.
If they're dead, that's It.. Why do people need to learn Buddhism
and engage in cultivation to tie themselves down? This is suffering!
Someone asked me, "When we can enjoy life, we should just
enjoy ourselves! Why bother to learn Buddhism and abide by Buddhist
precepts?"
Then another person told me, " I do not wish to become a Buddha
or a Bodhisattva, so why should I cultivate? "
Another said, " All Religions tell lies to fool people. They
are just talking rubbish. What cause and effect? What Heaven Realms?
What Hell? I don't give a damn!
We have to be extra patient when explaining Buddhism to this kind
of people. We might just give them basic Buddhism books. Or we could
share our experiences and thoughts with them on how we came to realize
the benefits of learning Buddhism.
In my mind, a human life is filled with the suffering of birth,
old age, sickness, and death. That is ordinary human life: suffering,
emptiness and impermanence. When we see clearly, we find that worldly
enjoyments are just fleeting moments. Your whole life can slip by
before you realize it's almost over.
A human life is very dreamlike. A wise person will seek a breakthrough
in understanding the purpose of living and solve the questions of
life and death.
Think about it ~~~~
The various manifestations of impermanence in a human life.
The fragility of a life.
The true meaning in living, the echoing emptiness of one's soul
and heart.
You may enjoy wealth, status and glory while you are alive, but
they won't do you any good after you die. So, how lasting is the
enjoyment of worldly pleasure?
Pondering these things will wake up our hearts.
The short span of my life has convinced me that the pursuit of
greatest value is to cultivate with great determination and persistence,
realize our True Nature, and achieve self-mastery in life and death.
Other than that, everything else is merely the rubbish of illusions
and wrong thoughts.
