Cases of Body Invasion: Case #1

  • Cases of Body Invasion: Case #1
  • From pp 114-120 of Creating Magic with Tantrayana Practices, the 114th book written by Master Sheng-yen Lu.
  • Translated by Janny Chow.

A student of mine has a sixteen year old daughter called Helen. Helen had a very close and intimate friend from school. The two girls were always visiting with each other and were quite inseparable.

One day, this classmate of Helen's committed suicide over some minor matter. Helen was so heartbroken that she cried till her tears went dry. After coming home from the memorial service, Helen felt a chill in her body and soon fell ill.

During her illness, Helen saw the deceased classmate in her house. Her friend sometimes stayed by her side, sometimes went away, and sometimes slept next to her in bed.

At first, it was at night when her friend would make frequent appearances. Later, she showed up during the daytime as well.

Her classmate implored, "I want to take you with me, so I can have some company on the road."

Helen's condition worsened. She could not sleep at night, and she felt tired all the time. The classmate frequently appeared to talk to her in her head, and it became impossible for her to go to school. She was afraid to look at the mirror as all she could see were reflections of this friend who had died.

Helen also started foaming uncontrollably at the mouth. When her friend was dying, there had also been uncontrollable foaming at the mouth.

Helen spoke to her parents, "There is no point in being alive. I want to kill myself." Her friend told Helen, "Now is the time."

The parents became very alarmed and took Helen to a doctor. The medical doctor made an examination and found everything to be normal. There was no physical illness. Next the parents took Helen to see a psychologist. After conversing with Helen, the psychologist decided that the problems were psychological in nature, and he advised the parents to talk to Helen to help her get over the loss of her friend.

Yet, the condition only deteriorated. Helen still saw her classmate every day, and the classmate still whispered into her ear every day. Furthermore, Helen started to act and talk like her classmate.

She told her parents, "I am not Helen. I have to go away now."

Her parents were driven to the wall and, at this point, it dawned on them that Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu who was living in the Seattle area in the United States was their only hope! The parents wanted to take Helen to the United States to visit the Grand Master.

"No!" Helen rejected the idea.

"Why not? It would be great to see the Grand Master."

"The Grand Master would keep us apart!" Helen's face took on a strange expression.

The parents finally prevailed and brought Helen to see me.

Helen's face was ashen and her whole body trembled slightly. Inside her body, I saw a dark shadow shifting up and down. It also moved nervously in and out of her body.

I spoke to Helen, "Heidi, you should go away now. Helen is already skin and bones and more than half dead. If it goes on like this, she will die. I know it does not concern you, but how can her parents take it?"

Helen exclaimed, "Oh, Grand Master, you recognize Heidi. Heidi will go away."

I placed my hand on her head for a long time, while watching her face turning from white to pinkish. The expression on her face no longer looked so unpleasant, and her suffering seemed to have completely lifted.

At this moment, the Great Yamantaka appeared in the empty space. After lightly grabbing hold of Heidi who had just scurried out, the Great Yamantaka sailed away on a cluster of clouds.

I turned to her parents, "It looks like Helen is healed now." The three of them prostrated to me.

They went back home. Helen completely returned to her normal self. She asked her parents, "How was the Grand Master able to call out the name of my friend?" She also commented, "When the Grand Master placed his hand on my head, I felt a cool breeze moving from top to bottom, weaving through all my internal organs. It was so soothing, and I felt I was becoming completely lucid. The Grand Master's hand is so strange!"

The above case is a true happening, and I have altered only the names. The classmate who passed away was the true cause of the illness.

In general, cases of body invasion by spirits are best treated during the early phase. This is because the longer the yin-spirit hides itself in the patient's body, the more the yang-energy of the living person will be drained away by the spirit, leading to many different types of illnesses. The most common symptoms are: insomnia, dizziness, sudden chills and sudden flushes, trance-like absent-mindedness, palpitations, terrible suspicions, depression, etc..

What can lead to one's body being invaded by a spirit? Based on my knowledge, there are many predisposing factors: when the constituents of one's energy body is lower in yang-energy; when one is on the downside of one's luck cycle; pre-existence of psychological impediments; wicked thoughts; encountering spirits at funerals or weddings; attachment of spirits with vengeance due to karmic obscurations incurred in previous lives, etc..

How may one prevent one's body from invasion by yin-spirits?

My reply is, "Dwell in positive thoughts and nurture a positive energy."

There was another time when a fellow cultivator confided in me, "I have been having trouble sleeping at night."

"What is happening?" I asked.

"Normally, I love to sleep and, as soon as I fall asleep, nothing could disturb me. I have always found sleeping to be the most enjoyable thing in the world. But recently, I have lost it."

"How many days now?"

"A week."

I noticed traces of dark energy strands under his eyes.

I told him, "First, wait two more days. If it stays the same, come to see me." I did not want to treat him right away and preferred him to do some adjustment first.

Two days later, I asked him how he was doing.

"It is still the same. I can't sleep well. Though I tried very hard, the sleep is light and I am easily awakened. After waking up, I cannot go back to sleep. It is very strange. It has plunged me into a bad mood and made me extremely tired!"

I took him to the shrine. Holding a Subduing Mudra with my left hand and a Sword Mudra with my right, I wrote words of the mantra on his body with the Sword Mudra to set up a sacred boundary around him. I invoked the Great Yamantaka while chanting and writing the mantra at the same time. Afterwards, I rang the vajra bell above his head.

That night after the ritual, he slept soundly until dawn without interruption. Since then, he has been able to sleep very well every night. The dark energy strands under his eyes quietly disappeared.

He asked me, "What was happening to me?"

I replied, "It was chong-fan." Chong-fan is an assault by noxious energy or spirits which can result in "spirit attachment" or, in severe cases, "body invasion." It is a condition in which treatment should be sought early.
