In general there are six realms of existence in this universe
(or samsara): the realm of various form and formless states
of existence of gods and celestial deities, the realm of the asuras
(jealous anti-gods), the realm of humans, the animal realm, the
realm of pretas (hungry ghosts), and the hell realm. Three
of these realms in particular (the realm of animals, hungry ghosts,
and hell beings) are pervaded by extreme suffering and are not conducive
for spiritual practice.
At the moment of death, the mental continuum of a sentient being
will experience strong projections of various mental states and
the heightened repercussions of ripening karma. In this bardo (lit,
in between or intermediate state of existence), such beings, especially
those who have not cultivated any spiritual practice, are in an
immediate danger of falling into a lower realm of existence.
A bardo deliverance ceremony is a powerful transmission of security
and protection that helps those in the bardo state by purifying
their mental continuums and empowering them to take rebirth in a
more favorable state of existence. Most importantly, it can awaken
beings to their own Buddha nature, planting seeds for an affinity
with the Buddhadharma. Thereby, spirits can be delivered into a
Buddha pure land and eventually attain buddhahood.
Nowadays, while worldly emotions and a lack of sensitivity to the
subtle nature of reality seems to dominate the mainstream of contemporary
society, there is an alarming increase of people overwhelmed by
attached spirits and karmic retributive energies. People with varying
degrees of spiritual insight may experience these attached spirits
as residual energies, as various obstacles in their careers and
relationships, or as negative emotions that seem to dominate their
actions.
People who register and make offerings on behalf of their attached
spirits, karmic enemies, and deceased ancestors at a bardo deliverance
or blessing ceremony will benefit both themselves and others by
such compassion. As well, there exists various land spirits and
deities in and around our homes. Thus, it is also beneficial and
wise to register these sentient beings for blessings and bardo deliverance.

as well as fortune and auspicious circumstances in their lives
