The following is an account of the Blessing Ceremony held at
the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple in Redmond, Washington, USA in February,
1987.
On February 7th, 1987, the True buddha School held its annual lunar
New Year Blessing Ceremony at the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple in
Redmond, Washington. About one thousand students from around the
world attended the ceremony.
Masters attending the ceremony included: John Chen, Chen Sen-ho,
Chen Sen-lung, Chung Lu-sheng, Li Mei-li, Li Hsing-chih, Lu Li-hsiang,
Luo Chen-fang, Kender Tomko, and Cheng Yu-hsin--from the United
States; Liao Yun-ling, Lai Wen-yan--from Canada; Liu Yi-jung--from
Hong Kong; Yu-Yin-shou, Chuang Huang-yu, and Liao Yu-tsun--from
Taiwan.
Three Tibetan lamas were present: Budon Chinchu, Tsangdui Gyalpo,
and Sonje Gyaltso. They all offered katas to Living Buddha Lian-sheng
and received blessings from the Living Buddha in return. Rev. Wu-beng,
Buddhist monk from an exoteric school, took refuge in Living Buddha
Lian-sheng at the ceremony.
Liu Yi-li and a group of True Buddha School students from Vancouver,
Canada were on their way to the ceremony at the Redmond temple when
Liu suddenly noticed an extraordinary phenomenon in the sky directly
above the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple. A beam of brilliant, milky
white light was descending from the sky and pouring into the temple.
To the side, another beam of brilliant green light was also descending
from interface, the two beams of brilliant light merged, forming
a spectacular sight. Pulling their car off the road, the students
all got out to take a look at this phenomenonal sight.
On the evening of February 8th, Liu Yi-li stood up and told everyone
of the miraculous sight she had witnessed. The descending and merging
of the two lights was an empowerment for all the sentient beings
present.
At 10:00 a.m. on February 7th, the Blessing Ceremony began. As
the assembly stood with great respect, bells and gongs sounded in
welcome during the ceremonial entrance of the founder of the True
Buddha School, the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master Living Buddha Lian-sheng.
The Founder gave the following verses to commemorate the occasion:
Happiness resides in one's mind,
The mind is the Buddha;
Once the mind harbors the Buddha,
Happiness naturally follows.
After the burning of the ceremonial prayer pamphlet, Living Buddha
Lian-sheng proceeded in accordance with the Blessing Ceremony liturgy--first
the purification mantras, then the invocation mantras, great homage,
offering, fourfold refuge, armor protection, sutra chanting, dance
of mudras, visualization, mantra chanting, entering into samadhi,
and finally the blessing empowerment. During the ceremony, a strong
spiritual energy pervaded the entire temple. Dharma rain showered
and Buddha light shone upon everyone in the assembly. All present
received great blessings from the Buddhas.
Living Buddha Lian-sheng noted in the ceremonial prayer that all
who had registered for the ceremony by mail would also receive great
blessings from the Dakinis. The registration forms were burnt along
with the ceremonial prayer.
For two afternoons, the masters took turns giving teachings to
the students at the temple.
On February 7th, at 8:00 p.m., Living Buddha Lian-sheng gave a
discourse on "The Boundless Mind" and the "Four Immeasurable
Minds."
May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness -
this is immeasurable loving-kindness.
May all beings be liberated from suffering and the causes of
suffering - this is immeasurable compassion.
May all beings be free from suffering and always stay happy
- this is immeasurable joy.
May all beings be free from grasping and aversion toward others,
and develop faith in the equality of all - this is immeasurable
equanimity.
Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the Four Immeasurable
Minds. After explaining the steps of the practice and the secret
method to engender these four immeasurable minds, Living Buddha
Lian-sheng gave the empowerment to all the students present.
The teaching of the Four Immeasurable Minds affirmed the great
white light above the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple as the "light
of loving-kindness and compassion."
On February 8th, at 8:00 p.m., Living Buddha Lian-sheng gave a
discourse on the visualization of Manjushri Boddhisattva's Sword
Practice. After sharing the secrets of this practice with the assemble,
Living Buddha Lian-sheng also gave the empowerment for this practice.
While the Living Buddha was explaining the visualization for the
Manjushri practice, red and yellow blossoms fell from the spiritual
realm and a great spiritual energy filled the auditorium. Many students
moved their hands spontaneously to form the Lotus Holding Mudra.
It was a wonderful moment. Many students themselves saw the showering
of red and yellow blossoms from above.
Living Buddha Lian-sheng announced, "With the showering of
flowers upon the assembly, everyone will receive auspiciousness
and their disasters will be removed. Manjushri Bodhisattva is the
Auspiciousness Vajra as well as the Prajna (Wisdom) Vajra."
The teaching of the Manjushri Sword Visualization affirmed the
great green light above the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple as the "light
of wisdom."
The Living Buddha stated, "Wisdom and Compassion are the two
requisite qualities spiritual cultivators must have before they
can help lead sentient beings to liberation. Wisdom without loving-kindness
and compassion will eventually turn one into a demon. Compassion
without wisdom will only help a limited number of sentient beings.
To yield the greatest power, there must be a union of there two
lights."
The following projects proposed by students deserve special mention:
Chung Hsiao-hsing from the Sheng-hsin Chapter in Japan brought
with him a plan to disseminate the True Buddha Dharma in Japan.
Lian-jung from Sao Paulo, Brazil had plans t translate the books
of Living Buddha Lian-sheng into Portuguese.
The Edmonton and Vancouver Chapters in Canada, as well as the Hsin-fa
Chapter in Hong Kong, will be responsible for the translation of
the Guru's books into English.
