Recently, True Buddha School students in Canada desired to establish
a local chapter of our school in Queens Park, Vancouver. The house
they planned to purchase there had a market value of two hundred
thousand U.S. dollars. However, because the house was rumored to
be haunted, there were no buyers and, at the time, the going rate
was only one hundred thousand U.S. dollars.
The previous owner, a medical doctor, had hung himself inside the
home. After suicide, the house had been rented to two Native Americans
who stayed momentarily but quickly moved away. They claimed they
often found themselves being pushed off the bed at night, and on
several occasions, awoke to find themselves on the front lawn outside
the home. Inside the house, and endless stream of unusual phenomena
- strange fires, odors, sounds, and sightings of ghost shadows -
occurred daily.
The students in Canada then came to ask me if they should purchase
the house.
"Yes," replied. "Buy the house and let me take care
of the problem. I will go and sleep in the house first."
In the majority of cases, haunted houses have disordered magnetic
energy fields. What had disturbed the magnetic energy field of this
particular house? The individual who had hung himself continued
to grasp onto a strong hatred, and it was this hatred that threw
the house's magnetic energy field into chaos.
In other cases, where nobody has died in a house, the problem can
be attributed to the building materials. For example, beams used
in the construction of a house originating from an old temple with
attached spiritual energy may also cause the magnetic energy field
to become disordered.
Still, in other cases, house may become haunted by natural causes.
Houses standing upon land with inherently chaotic magnetic fields
have a high potential of becoming haunted. At such sites, a geomancer
will find the needle of geomancer compass vacillating continually
from left to right and up and down. People living in such houses
will be affected by haunted spirits. They will have unstable temperaments,
meet with unexpected disasters, develop sudden terminal illnesses,
and their children's personalities will rapidly deteriorate. Inhabitants
will also be afflicted with neurosis and depression.
If a high degree of disorder exists in the magnetic energy field,
spirits can direct their hatred and grievances towards occupants
of the house. Foreign objects can actually materialize, objects
can fly around, and strange sounds and shadows may play tricks on
people.
Despite these obstacles, I encouraged my students to buy the haunted
house. I knew that an understanding of the causes behind the chaotic
magnetic energy field would allow us to better manage the problem.
We only needed to eliminate the "undesirable factors."
After they purchase the house, I will employ the following two
methods to rectify the situation:
1) After arriving at the haunted house, I will first locate the
object in which the deceased doctor's spirit has taken up lodging.
It may be the beam with which he hung himself, an image of a person
or animal in the living room, a desk, a chair, or even a rock in
the yard. After locating this object, I simply need to remove it
from the house.
After removing the object with the attached spirit, I will perform
a ritual to purify and establish a "boundary" around the
house. I will use a Tantric Buddhist "boundary setting"
method and invoke the Four Deva Kings and other devas to guard the
house.
The removal of this noxious factor should then normalize the magnetic
earth energy of the home so that it will no longer be haunted.
2) Upon arrival at the haunted house, I will call the doctor's
spirit to come forth and explain to him that the house now has a
new owner. I will also explain to him the workings of karma that
will, hopefully, ameliorate his hatred. (Generally, however, ghosts
who have committed suicide are filled with such strong hatred and
resentment that they do not easily let go of their emotional attachments.)
I will tell him that this house is to be converted into a local
chapter of the True Buddha School and that a plaque will be installed
for him at the left side of the shrine. By making offerings t this
spirit every morning and evening, it is our wish that his anger
and hatred will be relinquished. It would be nice if he took up
an interest in Buddhism as well. What spirit would not prefer accepting
and enjoying offerings from humans to scaring them with mischievous
activities?
I will likely try the second method first and, if it does not work,
I will resort to first. If the object to which the spirit is attached
is a supporting beam, for example, it will be quite difficult to
remove. If the spirit's anger will not appeased, I may only be able
to employ a "Ferocious Vajra Deity" method to evict the
spirit. I will then follow this with a "suppression method"
to prevent the beam from becoming repossessed. Finally, I will performed
rituals to purify the house and established a protective boundary
around it.
"Living Buddha Lian-sheng, are you not afraid of ghosts?"
one student asked.
"A hanging ghost can be terrifying, but I don't mind."
"Why not?"
"A person of "upright chi" is fearless."
"Are haunted houses affected by feng-shui?"
"Yes. A ghost's hatred and resentment disturbs the magnetic
energy field of a house."
When searching for a home, always try your best to learn about
the previous owners to avoid the purchase of a haunted house. If
you have already purchased a haunted house and are unable to rectify
the situation, then you can come and find me, Living Buddha Lian-sheng!
