Book 69 - Household Feng-Shui

  • Book 69: Household Feng-Shui
  • Appendix 08 : A Side Trip to Vancouver
  • Written by : Master Sheng-yen Lu
  • Translated by : Janny Chow

At 1:00 p.m., on June 27th, 1986, His Holiness and his family, Master Lian-shi and his family, and others (altogether eleven people) got into a van and drove from the Lian Shen Ching Tze to Vancouver, Canada. His Holiness had been invited to teach for two days at the Pootee Tang, the Vancouver chapter of the True Buddha School. We also planned to visit the World Expo that was being held in Vancouver during that time.

Early summer on the west coast of North America was much like late autumn in Hong Kong. The air was cool, bright, and crystal clear. The sky was an infinite stretch of blue with only a few wisps of cloud floating by - we had picked the perfect day to begin our outing. Along the way, we passed picturesque scenery and everyone was in high spirits. His Holiness was cheerful and chatted humorously with us.

When we reached the Canadian border, the Dharma brothers from Vancouver had already been waiting there for some time. After giving His Holiness a warm welcome, our two parties started driving towards Vancouver.

When we arrived at our destination, it was almost five o'clock. Instead of going to the hotel for a rest or a restaurant for dinner, His Holiness wanted to visit the venue where the Dharma Ceremony would be held. Matters relating to the dissemination of the Buddhadharma were foremost in his mind.

At the venue, the staff of Pootee Tang was working frantically to set up the shrine. Since the Dharma Ceremony to be held the next day was an important event, there was a sense of seriousness and urgency in the air. When His Holiness arrived, the workers all dropped what they were doing and ran hurriedly over to pay homage to him.

Then, about seven or eight of the workers started excitedly reporting to His Holiness that they had seen with their own eyes a rainbow-colored dragon in the sky earlier during the day. Everyone was trying to talk at the same time and there was intense excitement on every face. When His Holiness heard the news, he just smiled and did not say anything. Since I was an impatient person, I interrupted and questioned them, "What kind of rainbow-colored dragon? Under what circumstances did you see it?"

"I was the first one to see it while we were loading the wood works into the truck,"said one Dharma brother.

"We were in a wide open area and could see the sky for miles around. The dragon looked like cloud or mist, only it wasn't, and it was semi-transparent and rainbow colored,"said another Dharma brother.

"When we all saw it, the rainbow-colored dragon was flying slowly in the sky!"

"What time was it when you saw it?"I asked.

"It was earlier this afternoon, around one o'clock!"

"Which direction was the colored dragon coming from? To where was it flying?" I asked

"It was in the sky to the south, and it was flying with its head towards the northeast."

"Was it very clear? Why didn't you take a picture of the colored dragon?"

"We all saw it very clearly. We were in the middle of moving the woods and nobody had a camera. When we wanted to go and get one, the rainbow-colored dragon disappeared!"

"No pictures, what a pity!" I scratched my head in frustration. His Holiness looked at me smiling. Suddenly the significance of the direction and time the dragon was seen dawned on me. The dragon was coming from the south - wasn't Redmond to the south of Vancouver? Flying towards the northeast - wasn't that the direction one had to travel to reach Vancouver from Redmond? Around one o'clock - wasn't the time His Holiness left Ling Shen Ching Tze to come up to Vancouver?

Oh! Now I understood! The manifestation of the rainbow colored dragon was the auspicious sign accompanying the outing of a great sage! I was moved beyond words and turned my eyes towards His Holiness. He was smiling at me. In that one moment, his eyes spoke to me and I understood tacitly and felt a vibrant energy running through my body.
