Chapter 8 - Symmetry Is Good Luck

Some people asked: "What is the best appearance of a house?"

I answered: "Symmetry". It sounds simple, but in fact there a lot of learning involved.

Some people prefer to make their house exotic and outstanding with strange looks. As long as they keep the Five Elements in harmony, without contradictory forces, it is symmetrical.

The Esoteric teachings, for example, advocate "Five Wheels and Five Wisdoms."

The Five-Wheel tower has this shape: peach-tip shape at the top, beneath is a prolonged semi-circle, then is a triangle, further down is a circle and at the bottom is a square.

The Five Elements include: fire, wood, water, metal and earth. Earth generates metal; metal generates water; water generates wood and wood generates fire.

If the Five Elements are arranged in that order together with their corresponding shapes (see Chapter Four), some rotation clock-wise will give you a shape that is original and outstanding.

If we are not craving for "fashion", an ordinary symmetrical house will be very lucky.

The "dragon side" and the "tiger side" must be symmetrical. This is a very important point.

If you stand facing to the gate, your left hand side is the dragon side and your right hand side is the tiger side.

It would be best to have perfect symmetry between the dragon and the tiger sides.

The symmetry could also be "a long dragon and a tall tiger."

Generally speaking, most geomancers will prefer a taller and longer "dragon side" as it means good luck while it is bad luck to have a taller and longer "tiger side."

Perfect symmetry between the black dragon and the white tiger is the most auspicious.

A verse goes like this:

When a little tiger stands on its peak,

The wife will beat up her husband.

This means that if the tiger is taller than the dragon, the slave will dominate the master, with the Yin and Yang reversed. In that case, either the slave controls the master, or the female overpowers the male, which will result in disharmony, negative forces or backward movement of the land spirits. All this spells great misfortune.

I, Living Buddha Lian Shen, once visited a temple in a forest. The abbot showed me round to study the geomancy of the place. I found that the forest was located facing Wei with its back to Chou (Wei and Chou are the eighth and second of the Twelve Earthly Branches). This belonged to the topography of Gen. (Gen is one of the Eight Symbols for Divination, which means maintaining and solidness. The Zhen and Qian in the following sentence are also two symbols in the system, which mean respectively thunder and heaven.) The water in front came from the Zhen position at the back to the Qian position in front. Its double guards were not obvious. I examined the place where the abbot lived. It was beneath the white tiger hillock, not in a dominant position.

I asked the abbot presently: "Who live at the top of the white tiger hillock?"

"My disciples."

"You are to lose your position very soon," I concluded.

"Why?"

"This is a situation where the slave dominating the master. You'll lose your position sooner or later."

He was such an honest monk. He became worried but very quiet.

A few years later, I learned that he was no longer the abbot.

When the tiger is tall and long, it means that the rival force is too strong. Most of those who live at the top of a tiger hillock usually become hysterical or power-craving. They either develop a stubborn mentality to fight or harbour dark designs. In a word, unfortunate things will happen.

I, Living Buddha Lian Shen, believe that in choosing a house site, it is necessary to decide on the direction of one's house. The direction the gate faces is extremely important. It is better to have that direction coincide with one's birthday. (It is the hour, the date, the month and the year when you were born.) Then pay attention to the symmetry of the black dragon and the white tiger. Don't make the tiger too outstanding. For that may invite great misfortune. It would be too late to regret once disaster occurs.

I studied the Taoist avertion by praying and the chanting of mantras in the Esoteric School. All this belongs to tranquilizing methods. It can make the situation better for a while.

Most geomancers only know how to go along with the land forces, but they do not know that inside the land forces there are complex relations among the primeval forces from the time when Earth was first separated from Heaven, the Yin (negative) and the Yang (positive), the four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter), the Five Elements and the Eight Natural Phenomena (heaven, earth, wind, thunder, water, fire, mountain and marsh). (Note: According to ancient Chinese philosophy, the very original forces generated the primeval forces to separate Earth from Heaven. The primeval forces generated the Yin and the Yang. The Yin and the Yang generated the four seasons. The four seasons generated the eight natural phenomena.) If we know there are contradicting forces, we can use some methods to tranquilize the contradiction. Once such contradictions are transformed, they can bring good luck instead of bad luck.

From the "dragon gods" I set up, many people have often seen golden light or blue light. Many people have seen blue dragons and heard the groaning of dragons. The dragon gods emit light as bright as the sun and the moon and they will remain external. In places where the white tiger is taller, it is necessary to plant my "blue dragon tablet" to tranquilize it.
