Chapter 6 - The Presence And Absence Of Affection Makes A Vital Difference

Master Hong Ren, the fifth patriarch of the Chan Zong School, wrote the following famous verse:

It is affection that sows the seeds.

It is the condition that bear fruit.

There will be no seeds sown without affection.

Neither there will be virtue or life.

The idea in the verse applies so well to the study of residence.

According to A Book of Secrets on Land Spirits, the decisive factor we go by in determining the future prosperity of houses is also "affection" or the absence of it:

• With affection - thriving.

• Without affection - declining.

How do we know if there is affection or not? It is very much the same when we are admiring flowers. When a flower is dripping with tenderness and charm, its pistil radiating fragrance, it is in full bloom with affection. Once the flower begins to wither, there is a general lack of power and life, with its petals turning dry and yellow. Then it is declining, with no more affection.

In the study of people's looks, there is affection if the person has got rosy cheeks, charming eye-brows and bright-looking eyes. If, on the other hand, the person has got pale or grey cheeks, with a dull look in his or her eyes, then there is no more affection. The often used idiom "the dispirited face of a widow" precisely describes a person with no more thoughts of love or passion.

In the study of residence, how do we distinguish houses with affection and houses without it? There is a great deal learning involved here. In very simple terms, if the house looks lively and vigorous, with no contradictory forces in it, then it has got affection. On the other hand there are many houses which look very lively and vigorous but which have contradictory forces in them. In that case, there will be no affection. Other cases will include: houses that are overbearing, houses with major defects, absurd or irrational houses, or houses too plain and boring.

A good master of geomancy should be able to tell houses with affection from houses without it. This is usually studied from the outer look of the whole house. Keen observations take many years of experience. A master of rich experience can come to a conclusion at the first glance.

I, Living Buddha Lian Shen, believe that the skill in judging fitness of houses can be only sensed, but cannot be explained in words. What I mean is that it takes years of practice and should not be regarded as easy and simple. Experienced masters tell you the way things are. Inexperienced ones can only create some momentary excitement. True masters can "smell" things out. They can tell you if the house is all right just by the "air" in it.

This is the knack in studying the outer look of the house.

Besides, whether the house has affection or not also depends on the magnetic direction of the owner's life.

Each one of us living in the directions of the 360 degrees has two directions of vitality and two directions of death.

If the direction of the house coincides with the magnetic direction of the owner's life, there will be affection.

If the direction of the house does not coincide with its magnetic direction of his life, there will be no affection.

In general, therefore, masters of geomancy judge the look of houses by its location direction. If the direction matches with that of the owner's life, there will be a great future and prosperity. If they mismatch, there will be misfortune or disaster. All this is entirely based on the theory of magnetic directions of life.

Most masters of geomancy would divide the 360 degrees into 12 sections to match the Earthly Branches in a person's birthday. There are 12 Earthly Branches in ancient Chinese philosophy which are used in combination with the twelve Heavenly Stems to designate years, months and hours. The 12 Earthly Branches are: zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu, hai. Some masters prefer to divide the 360 degrees into 24 sections, and still some prefer to use the "Nine Stars" method or the "Eight Directions" method. I would say that the most correct method is to use the 12 Earthly Branches, though the combination of various methods is also possible.

In my opinion, in assessing the possibilities of a house, it is necessary to study both its outer look and its location direction. When its directions coincide, it is still necessary to study it further. When we are building a house, it is advisable to consult a master of geomancy, for the outside appearance of the house often determines its presence or absence of affection, peace and adversity, good luck or disaster.

I was once invited to examine a house in a garden style. I toured around the residence just once, and came to the conclusion: "The owner here has got a tumour."

"How did Grandmaster know?" the host was amazed.

"It's only natural, for its house is full of tumours all over its place."

Later I got to know that the hostess had a tumour in her womb, three tumours in her testines, and another in her stomach. She had already had several operations!

The outer look of a house is very important. If its outside appearance is lively and powerful, unhindered by any contradiction, then it is affectionate and will bring prosperity. Otherwise, it may herald bankruptcy!

It is great truth that "prosperity goes with affection while decline is accompanied by its absence."
