Chapter 29 - The Fear Of 28 Years Of Age

In my work as a geomancer, I had a very strange experience!

In a traditional Chinese courtyard surrounded by houses on all sides, there was a family whose male members all died at the age of 28.

The father died of illness at 28. The uncle left home at 28, never to return. The eldest son, climbing a mountain, fell off and died at 28. The second son died of cancer at 28...

The third son, approaching 28 soon, was very much afraid. So he went everywhere to worship the gods and the Buddha for help. He got very different answers from his trips. He was indeed worried.

Theirs was a big family. They asked me to go and have a look. They wanted me to find the cause of death at the age of 28.

There was nothing wrong with their graveyard.

Their houses did have many problems. I pointed out the problems one by one and asked them to set things right as soon as possible.

This group of houses was in little wood in the countryside, surrounded by many ponds, some dry, some with enough water and some with very little water.

I found that the water from some ponds could go directly to the central room, some water could go to the room on the sides, and some water could go right to the main gate.

I told the family to fill up the dry ponds. The banks of those ponds with water had to be repaired so as to make into a shape of "within the bow".

The main room of the house was very tall, but the newly built houses at the back were very low. Houses tall in the front and low at the back foretell that the family will lose some members, particularly young members.

I told the family to rebuild the house at the back, making them as tall as those in the front.

They set things right as I told them.

They also asked me "why the age of 28, of all ages?"

This was very difficult to explain offhand. But I told them, "There must be a fixed number. For example, the total number of pillars in the houses happens to be 28; there are 28 trees surrounding the houses; or there are 28 stoves, or 28 beams, or 28 doors...."

"28 kitchen stoves? Not possible!"

"I think so too," I replied laughing. "It's only an example."

Later they told me that there was indeed a fixed number the pillars in the houses added up to be exactly 28! What accuracy! I had their great admiration.

They asked me if they should put up more pillars.

"No," I said. "This does not mean that if there are one hundred pillars, everyone in the house will live to be one hundred years old. This number only happens to be a fixed number. The real cause lies in the ponds and the height of the houses."

I told them the following:

"There was little water in some ponds" - This stands for short life of the young members of the family. It means they cannot live to a "full age". Particularly, some ponds had their corners towards the main gate or towards the central room. It is called "penetration into the heart" or "an arrow into the cheek". They were all bad signs for the young male members.

"The front houses are tall and the back houses are low" - The front houses stand for former generations and houses at the back stand for later generations. So when the houses at the back are low, it is the children that suffer. Houses at the back can be taller than front houses or just as tall as others, but never lower than the rest.

Now ten years have passed since I studied that group of houses. The family told me that new people living in those houses enjoy peace and quietude. Some young male members have lived past 28 and nothing has happened to them. They have got over the fear of 28. They are no longer worried.

I, living Buddha Lian Shen, am particularly good at identifying houses that cause undue deaths of family members and also houses that "bear" no children. A verse in A Book of Secrets on Land Spirits goes:

Members are few if the house wants strength.

No children are born if vitality forces are not present.

All children die if there is high pressure on the house.

No child can survive if the house is washed by water.

Houses must have some parts of strength, without which family members will be limited. If the land is too flat, the house has no vitality and then no children will be born into the house. If the house is surrounded by overbearing objects, there will be miscarriages or still births. If the house is washed on all sides, children can not survive.

These things will also happen if the house is located either in front of a temple or behind a temple, for the vitality of the land spirits is absorbed by the temple. I firmly believe that the presence and absence of the land vitality is important in geomancy. Only masters of real learning can detect its existence. The presence and absence not only affects the life of children, but also the health of the whole family. It is advisable not to live in houses without vitality of land spirits.
