Chapter 26 - What To Do With A "Haunted House"?
Recently my students in Canada wanted to buy some house to set
up a chapter there. The house they had in mind is near the Empress
Park. Ordinarily, the house was worth 200 thousand U.S. dollars,
but it was set at 100 thousand.
The reason was that it was a well-known haunted house.
The previous owner of the house was a doctor who hanged himself
there.
The house was once let to two Indians, who ran away not long afterwards.
When they were sleeping at night, they were pushed off bed; when
they were sleeping inside, they were thrown outside onto the lawn.
Strange happenings continued without stop.
From time to time there were strange sparks, strange odors, strange
sounds, and ghost shadows.
The Canadian students asked me if they could buy the house.
My reply was: "Yes. Leave everything to me. I'll go and stay
there first!"
In most cases houses become haunted because their magnetic land
spirits are confused; they are confused because some people have
killed themselves in the house; their strong hatred has thrown the
magnetic land spirits into disorder. It is this resentment that
haunts the place.
Some houses are haunted not because of suicide inside the house
but because of the building materials. Some of the materials carry
spirits. Suppose that we buy the roof beam of an ancient temple
and make it the roof beam of our own house. If the beam happens
to carry spirits, it will throw the magnetic land spirits into confusion,
which in turn makes the house haunted.
Still some houses become haunted naturally, because the land on
which they are built is chaotic in its magnetic land spirits. On
such pieces of land, when the geomancer's compass does not work
- its needle, jumping and jerking, does not settle down at any position.
A house built upon such land may become haunted.
People who live for a long time in a house with confused land spirits
will be seriously affected - they will have an unsteady temper,
develop incurable diseases or meet unexpected happenings. Their
children's moral character will change quickly or become very bad.
The children may get neurotic or depressed.
If the land spirits are extremely confused, things in the house
can fly here and there by themselves, certain images may show up,
strange sounds may be heard and strange-looking shadows may flash
across. Such things may tease people viciously.
The dead person's resentment may show its effect on people staying
in the house.
In spite of all this, however, I agreed that my students in Canada
should buy the haunted house.
This is because it is fairly easy to handle confused land spirits
once we know the cause. All we have to do is to remove the cause
of confusion.
I know two ways of dealing with this haunted house:
First, when I visit the haunted house, I will first of all find
out the object in which the doctor hanged himself, or the photo
of a person or the photo of an animal in the sitting-room, or a
table or a chair, or the stone in the courtyard. This is to find
where the doctor's soul is staying. Once I find that, I will move
it out of the house.
Once the object the spirit is staying with is taken away, I will
"clean" the house and "mark out the boundaries".
Following the Tantric method, I will use the four Heavenly Kings
to mark the boundaries, so that the heavenly gods can protect the
house.
Once the cause of confusion is removed, the land spirits will become
normal again and the house will not be haunted any more.
Second, when I visit the haunted house, I will first invoke the
spirit of the dead doctor and explain to it that the owner of the
house is changed and that the cause of his resentment is gone, in
the hope that this can pacify his strong feelings. (However, for
most of the resentful ghosts, it is very difficult to pacify their
strong feelings, for otherwise they would not have hanged themselves.)
In addition, I will also explain to the doctor's spirit that this
house will be a shrine of the True Buddha School. On the left, we
shall set up a seat for his spirit to be offered sacrifice every
morning and evening. We shall wish his spirit peace, security and
quietude. We shall wish that his spirit will study Buddhism and
enjoy the happiness of man's world.
To enjoy the happiness of man's world is of course much better
than to frighten people by mischief.
If the second method does not work, I have to use the first. If
the spirit resides with the roof beam, and it is impossible to move
the beam, I have to use the Vajra method to drive the spirit away.
I will first pacify the beam and then "clean" the house
and "mark out the boundaries".
"Aren't you afraid, Living Buddha Lian Shen?" my students
asked me.
"The spirit of someone hanged is terrible, but I don't mind."
"Why?"
"An honest person is dauntless!"
"Is a house haunted because of geomanic features?"
"Yes. The resentment of the dead has confused the magnetic
field of the house."
If you want to buy a house, you have to know as much as possible
about the previous owner.
Don't buy haunted houses. If you have bought one and cannot do
anything about it, then come to me, Living Buddha Lian Shen, for
help.
