Chapter 21 - Unsupported Seats Of Gods
When I first arrived in the United States, I was requested
to practise geomancy in many places of the country.
One of the families I visited had a very lucky restaurant.
I say "very lucky" because it was very lucky
indeed in terms of geomanic features, as described by
many geomancers.
In fact, I did feel it was not bad at all.
But the fact was that the restaurant was stagnant.
Not only was the staff lifeless, even the customers
became spiritless as soon as they entered. There were
a couple of cats. "One could catch birds with a
basket in front of the gate" - very few visitors
indeed. It seemed that the owner could hardly afford
the power bills.
After investigation I concluded: "The seat of
gods is above the door frame and beneath it is the door
of the kitchen leading to the hall. This is precisely
the passageway for the waitresses carrying dishes to
and fro."
I told the host, "The seat of gods is not correctly
located."
"How?"
"It's not supported."
"What's wrong with that?"
"If there is nothing supporting the seat of gods,
the forces of fortune are not properly received; with
the constant banging of the door, the gods above get
no peace or quietness and have to run away."
"With the gods away, it is still all right if
the customers have not run away," the host was
joking.
"Since the gods are gone, the customers are naturally
gone. This is exactly the mischief!"
The owner of the restaurant never believed in gods
and he was following suit in arranging a seat of gods.
After my explanation, he didn't know what to do. So
following my advice, he took down the seat of gods and
moved it to the "store of wealth" in the hall.
It had solid backing and was protected by walls on the
left and right, a place that was both warm and quiet.
I also told the owner to put a number of lights, offer
sacrifices regularly, and make the seat a magnificent
place.
I also advised the owner to run an advertisement for
the celebration of the first anniversary, during which
period one dish and a plate of fruit were free of charge.
More cooks were called in to do specialties for the
occasion.
The removal of the seat of gods "brought the dying
back to life." There was a long queue of customers
every day stretching from the gate to the road. It was
crowded inside, making a nice mess of cups and plates.
The owner could hardly believe that was true!
Whenever I visited the place the owner would come out
to greet me, gigling: "Welcome, Living Buddha!
Welcome, my god of fortune!"
This restaurant became properly protected and prosperous
after the seat of gods was moved to a lucky place and
sacrifices were regularly offered. The owner made a
large fortune and bought two other restaurants. I was
also requested to study the best location for the seat
of gods in both restaurants. Now the three restaurants
were making good money, business being brisk.
When I was in Taiwan, I also studied two restaurants
whose seats of gods were above their doorframes, which
were passageways. There were always many people coming
and going.
I warned the owners that the seat of gods should not
be unsupported nor should there be many people coming
and going. I advised them to move the seat of gods away
or to block the passageway under it.
The two owners agreed but ignored my advice completely.
According to the latest information, one of the restaurants
had gone bankrupt and the other was very much in the
red, and was looking for someone to take over.
I, Living Buddha Lian Shen, believe that there should
be no opening either above or below or on the left or
right of the seat of gods. If windows are needed, they
should be in the center of the wall on its left or right.
Openings above or below the seat of gods are unlucky
because they can't hold the coming fortune. The reason
is very simple: if there are openings above or below
or on its left or right, there is a lot of leaking of
vitality forces, and the god spirit is not steady.
For ordinary households, the seat of gods should also
be correctly chosen, without openings above or below
it. If the seat of gods is in its right place, the good
influence of the gods can cancel out some bad effect
of the unlucky features of the house if any.
Previously I had written about the absence of openings
above or below the seat of gods or on its right and
left. Some students of mine misunderstood me. They thought
that there should be no windows on the three walls.
In fact only the wall against which the seat stands
should have no windows around the seat. The walls on
its right and left can have windows in their centers,
preferably with "guards" present.
Besides, it is not correct either to put the seat of
gods beside the door, because when the door closes or
opens there is wind which makes the forces unsteady
and also because there will be constant banging. Moreover,
the wall against which the seat of gods stands must
be very solid and steady, and should not be shaking
or vibrating all the time, for if the seat is not firmly
fixed, it will fall down sooner or later; and once it
falls down, the owner will be bankrupt.
