Chapter 10 - Where Should The Gate Be?
Most geomancers would agree that northwest and southwest directions are the "gates for ghosts". The gate of the house should not be in those positions. The location of the gate is decided in consideration of the magnetic field of one's birthday and the direction that goes with that magnetic field. Gates are "openings for fresh air". The main gate is a "major opening for fresh air". In modern apartment buildings, the main entrance at the ground floor is the main gate, the major opening; gate (door) to your apartment is a minor opening for fresh air. The gate is as important as a person's mouth. There is the saying in Chinese that most diseases enter the body through the mouth while most misfortunes are caused by the mouth. The gate of the house is as important as that - it dominates the lifeline of the house. Some people say: The main gate should face the east - The sun rises from the east, so the gate symbolizes vitality and it is suitable for business men. The main gate should face the south - It symbolizes a King with his back towards the north and looking down on his subjects in the south; so this is suitable for statesmen, religious leaders or industrialists. I would say, however, that both the east and south should be avoided if the magnetic field of the host's birthday is in contradiction with these two directions. Some of my disciples would ask me: "Which should be the best gate for a house, the middle gate, the dragon gate or the tiger gate?" (The dragon gate is on the left and the tiger gate is on the right.) In the early years, when Master Qing Zhen was teaching A Book of Secrets on Land Spirits, he told that whether the gate should be in the middle, right or left depends on the direction of the water gods. This is a great secret in geomancy! The middle gate is best when the water gods are concentrated in front of the house. If, for example, there is a lake or an expanse of the sea in front of the house, the middle gate is good. Moreover, if the land is very flat, inclining to neither side, with no hilly places nearby, the middle gate is also preferable. The dragon gate is best when the water gods flow from the tiger side to the dragon side. That is, the land in front of the house slopes from the right to the left (if you look out from within the house). If there is a river, it flows towards the left. The tiger gate is best when the water gods flow from the dragon side to the tiger side. That is, the land slopes from the left to the right. If there is a river, it flows towards the right. These are great secrets for the location of the gate. They sound simple, but are in fact invaluable. All these gates are designed to let in the gods of water, that is, the vitality forces of the water gods, so that the house is full of these forces, which are in effect forces of fortune. I once changed the gate of the house for a businessman. It should be a dragon gate but he made a tiger gate. As a result, his business was going from bad to worse as his negotiations came to nothing and his employees were not efficient enough. He was disheartened. After the gate was changed, the vitality forces of the water gods were let in, turning the house into a lucky place. The first batch of orders came with great success. Everybody became spirited and the business was flourishing again. This is one example to show that where the gate should be depends on the direction of the water gods. Where to let in the water gods is the first consideration. "What should we do if the gate direction and the magnetic field of one's birthday do not coincide?" some of my disciples asked. "You can change the door leaves," I replied. Once the door leaves are changed, the direction is also changed. You can turn the door leaves 90 degrees. Architects all know how to change the direction of a gate. Remember: the direction of the whole building remains the same; what is changed is only the direction of the door leaves. They are changed to coincide with the magnetic direction of your birthday. Some disciples again ask me: "What do we do in the following situation: the house should have a dragon gate, but now has got a tiger gate; the dragon gate side is the living-room - it is not possible to have a gate there?" Master Qing Zhen once told me how to avert an unlucky star:
Master Qing Zhen gave an illustration in explanation. In billiards, for instance, when we hit a ball to send it into the hole, we need the reaction from another ball. In our case, the forces of the water gods hit the tablet first and, from its reaction, bounce back into the house. The site for the tablet, however, takes a true geomancer to locate. The tablet must be set up with prayers to avert an unlucky star. That is to offer sacrifices to gods of negative forces. The tablet becomes effective only with these prayers and sacrifices. I, Living Buddha Lian Shen, use the Twelve Earthly Branches to make the direction of the house match the magnetic direction of one's birthday. Then I use the flowing direction of the water gods to decide whether the dragon gate, the tiger gate or the middle gate would be better. Both methods are important in choosing the direction of the gate. Geomancers can't afford not to know them.
