Chapter 7 - Waves Of The Lake

When wind blows over the surface of an ocean, ocean waves form.

When wind blows over the surface of a lake, lake waves form.

Lake Sammamish is not considered a major lake in the States, but it is one of the bigger lakes in the state of Washington. Its rythmic tides and rumbling waves are quite comparable to ocean waves.

I say that this lake is alive because it sways, moves, and speaks.

I have listened attentively to the waves of the lake. It tells me that in this world, a major event will take place and it will spread all over the world.

It is the story of a sage:

Cultivators all over the world have heard about this person. Many ascetics, yogi, tantric masters, Buddhist monks, and heads of other religions are continually hearing stories about him. Accounts of this person reach their ears, like tides of the lake, waves upon waves.

As with Buddha Shakyamuni, this person has come to deliver sentient beings. He has many disciples all over the world. Also like Buddha Shakyamuni (who, upon first giving his teaching, was recognized by many cultivators as the Illuminating Buddha, while discredited by many others), when his new ways of teaching are introduced, both praise and slander ensue, both positive and negative views are put forth.

Those who praise him acclaim that this illuminating sage is unprecedented, Dharma caused.

Disclaimers worry that he may be an ingenious impostor.

Those who hold the positive view believe that this person has achieved self-realization, has transcended birth and death, and has liberated himself from worldly troubles.

The negative view holders speculate that this person might be a representative of Mara disguised as a Zen master.

Not just in Taiwan and the United States, but all over the world have stories about him spread. The thought of this sage is a powerful energy. His thought can cure many people's illnesses. This sage has used his spiritual power remotely to heal many, many people.

When the thought of this sage is directed to a deceased person, the spirit of this person is liberated. A thought from this sage can open the gates of hells and release the suffering spirits.

People are saying: this sage is the "Great Univeral Compassion Eye" of Buddha Locana.

People are saying: this sage is the incarnation of Amitahba Buddha who comes because of his great vows to liberate living beings. He is the emanation of Vajrapani Bodhisattva.

People are saying: this sage has vows as great as that of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva1; many spirits in the nether world will be liberated.

Note 1: The vow of Ksitigarbha is that he refuses to become a Buddha (and enter Nirvana) until all suffering beings in the hells are liberated.

People are saying: the Pure Land of this Lotus Bodhisattva is the greatest Buddha realm of this generation.

Almost every one is discussing this sage. Many people helped by him believe in him and are making testimonies everywhere. The sage has indeed attained realization, and his wisdom is almost the wisdom of this Universe. He knows the past, the present, and the future. He can know everything about anyone, including his thoughts. He can see the farthest of the heavens, and the deepest of the hells. He can hear the voices of Bodhisattvas, gods and ghosts. He can travel everywhere out of his body, and he can divide himself, entering with inexhaustible transformation bodies into his disciples' dreams, and give clear advise and guidances. This is an achievement unheard of.

Many of these wonderful achievements are those of the supreme. The sage enters into Nirvana, and comes out of Nirvana. His face bears the radiant light of the Universe. He tells all of his disciples in this world, the Ocean of Light of the Supreme Universe is not very far away, it can be seen inside the Self. As long as the Light in one's heart is revealed, the Self is united with the Supreme Universe, and truly enters Nirvana.

Indeed he does not fall into cycles of reincarnations. Indeed he is free of vexation. His wisdom is of the highest supreme, and his appearance is indeed a great salvation of the Universe.

People from all over the world are coming to seek him out. He is an illuminating Boddhisattva delivering salvation, the most extraordinary Dharma-cause for this generation.

But, there are people who are jealous of him and utter slanders to destroy him, just like Buddha Shakyamuni who was encircled by rumours throughout his life. They derided Buddha Shakyamuni for marrying and begetting a son. They accused him of lusting after another's offering, and of seducing a maiden. They dismissed his Lotus Sutra as a myth.

They discredited him for leaving asceticism and becoming a deity who drank milk. They said he cared for his own comfort while letting his disciples suffer. They said he was not learned and educated and thus not worth discussion.

During that time, many Brahman priests, ascetics, and fire worshippers jeered Buddha Shakyamuni, and cursed him furiously.

Now when this sage is under the attacks of rumours, or bestowed with praise, he himself is actually not feeling sad or happy. He has already reached a state of absolute peace. He desires and wishes nothing. He still lives a simple daily life, and enters daily into the heart of the highest Supreme of the Universe.

All the sounds of gusty wind and rain in this world, upon reaching someone who has a quieted mind, automatically turn into nothingness. He does not pay attention to them or care for them any more.

But, this sage knows, the waves of Lake Sammamish will be forever telling the story of a sage, till time immemorial.
