Chapter 22 - Vibrations and Resonance

A student asked me, "Master, which mantra do you recite?"

My answer was very extraordinary:

The sound of flight of the Dakinis;

The sound of extinction in the universe;

The sound of the self-revolving earth rubbing against the atmosphere;

The sound of one's own blood in circulation;

And the sound of the deep at the bottom of Lake Sammamish.

Such are the sounds of mantras of the Holy-Red-Crown-Vajra-Master. They are of extremely great value. This is the secret of secrets of the guru's mantra. These mantras are not spoken by Buddhas nor by Bodhisattvas. They are not recorded on any Buddhist sutras. There is no need to consult masters from everywhere. But the secret, indeed, comes from the universe and it is the most secret root sound of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Tantric practitioners need to learn to recite mantras. Many people have gone to many places, looking for mantras. Some people will recite anything as long as it is a mantra, and certain mantras with Sanskrit sounds are treasured as gems by some people. Some people might consider themselves to be the smartest, and consider their pronunciations to be the most correct but, actually, they are just copying others in learning and reciting those mantras. They think that this is the way it is supposed to be. Actually those mantras are useless.

Which mantras are useful?

"The mantra is inside one's own body. The frequency of the mantra has to be able to cause vibrations in one's kundalini1. That is, the sound of such mantras can cause one's internal fire to spark, to grow, and to surge up and set the whole body afire. This mantra sound is a kindling, a kind of wind, to incite one's kundalini, to keep the internal fire vibrating. The sound of the mantra travels toward the inside of one's body, causing one's kundalini to awake and vibrate. Only such a mantra is useful."

Note 1: Sanskrit, lit. "snake," also called "serpent power," because this sleeping spiritual force in every human being lies coiled at the base of the spine. Once awakened, it rises through a series of centers (chakra) and finds expression in the form of spiritual knowledge and mystical visions.

"Because of the empowerment of the mantra, the kundalini is set into vibration. Together the vibrating sound of the mantra and the kundalini become resonant with the Cosmic Consciousness. With the urging sound of the mantra, the kundalini merges into Space, and becomes Firm-Willed. When one's own sound of the mantra becomes resonant with the sound of the mantra of the Cosmic Consciousness, then there will be merging and unification, and truly entering into Samadhi."

It was only when I achieved the above practice that Bodhisattva Maitreya of the Tusita Heaven appeared before me and crowned me with the Red Crown. This is because only a master with actual achievement would understand the true meaning of the mantras. Some tantric practitioners, trying very hard to learn mantras, to study the Sanskrit, might think that their own pronunciation is the oldest and the most correct. Actually, is Sanskrit really the oldest? Wasn't there an ancient Sanskrit before? And, before the ancient Sanskrit, there was an even more ancient Sanskrit and, prior to that, there was the most primitive Sanskrit.

Some people have brought mantras written in Hindi or Pali and shown them to my Tibetan guru, asking,

"Can you read this?"

My Tibetan guru had not studied Hindi nor Pali; he looked at the roll of scripts and could not read them. He told the visitors, "I don't understand these mantras, but a better mantra is in your own body, waiting to vibrate and resonate. You have to be able to vibrate it, and also be able to cause the whole Cosmos to vibrate and, when the two vibrate at the same frequency, then there will be a unifying resonance."

The visitors then realized. Ah! That was it! Happily they accepted the wisdom and thanked my guru.

I have seen Dakinis flying over Lake Sammamish. They were extremely graceful, with billowing, ethereal garments of many colors and beautiful silks. Their flight was extremely balanced, dance-like, as they flew over Lake Sammamish. Their flight was accompanied by a sound, a mantra, which has stayed with me in my heart. The sound of this mantra resembles the joy of Zen meditation. It seems to have various meanings, including hand gestures and mudras with soft touches, glances of a most special kind, and a seemingly limitless, bright transcendence of all forms. The sound of this mantra has a secret strength.

Listen calmly! In the universe there are sounds of extinction, sounds of rubbing of the self-revolving earth, sounds of one's own blood circulating. Do not be impatient or anxious; this is a very good beginning. One has first to be able to hear these mantras, to wait for the sound of the cosmos, to contemplate the sound of the cosmos, and to learn to recite the sound of the cosmos. This is not an ordinary game.

Not getting too close nor staying too far away, this merging of the sounds of the mantras becomes an intimate relationship; yet neither one should try to dominate the other. It is not pleasure, yet there is pleasure, and there is no dissatisfaction. One's internal fire surges upward, merges with the Cosmic Consciousness, and the two become one. This kind of merging of the sounds of the mantras is unique and unparalleled.

Holy-Red-Crown-Vajra-Master and the essence of Lake Sammamish are merging into each other. This is mainly due to the sounds of the mantra coming from the bottom of the lake. When the mantra from the bottom of the lake is recited, the lake will appear and start rocking in my heart, with the lake water gently flowing over it. No matter how far I am away from the lake, or whether I am travelling overseas, as long as I recite the mantra, the lake and I will gradually merge into one.

This is the great secret of the mantra; the mantra is for merging. This surpasses all material things and is the root of Tantric masters. This kind of great secret can never be understood by people who are trying their hardest to seek externally for their mantra! The secret of the mantra is in vibrations and resonance.
