Chapter 7 - Voices Through The Walls
There is a student whose refuge name is "Lian-chung."
(In this chapter only his refuge name will be used as it has impact
on other people.)
Lian-chung was the manager of a Taipei trading company. Business
in the company was very smooth and lucrative. Three acquaintances
involved in the same trade invited Lian-chung into a joint-venture
in setting up another large, trading company. Lian-chung is a very
prudent person. Whenever he starts a new venture, he writes to consult
with the Master before making his decisions. Therefore, his business
thrives and he has never had any loss. Naturally, he wrote to the
Master regarding the joint-venture of this new company. After the
letter was mailed and before Lian-chung received any reply, the
other three partners invited him to discuss the plan of the new
venture at the offices of another company. This other company was
located on the second floor of a building in which Mr. Chang, the
person in charge of the company, had a residence on the ninth floor.
After long hours of discussion, Lian-chung felt tired and wanted
to leave. But the trio would not let him go, suggesting that they
all go out for supper at the end of the meeting. Mr. Chang proposed
that Lian-chung first take a rest in the guest room of his residence
on the ninth floor. Later they would call him for supper.
Lian-chung went upstairs to Mr. Chang's residence and fell fast
asleep. Sometime later, he woke suddenly.
Something strange was happening - he unexpectedly heard the voices
of his three partners talking about plans. The voices were tiny,
but extremely clear. It was very quiet in the guest room except
for the voices that went on continuously. Lian-chung knew positively
the voices were those of his partners. He heard evertvthing they
said. "This time when he joins us, we will take care of him
together."
"Chang will be responsible for all the controls and will bring
him down."
"Ha! We will definitely get rid of him this time."
He heard many plans. For example: to use his checks to draw cash;
to arrange for one of Chang's relatives to take care of the accounting;
how to give misleading quotations; how to make empty promises; how
to secure the actual controls; and how to cheat. The more Lian-chung
heard, the more shocked he was. He tried to pinch himself, to see
if it were a dream, but he could definitely feel the pain. Hurriedly
he put on his clothes and took the elevator from the ninth floor
down to the second floor conference room, where the trio was still
meeting. Lian-chung was perplexed to see them there. How had he
been able to hear their voices from where he had been sleeping so
many floors away? Wasn't this strange? Between the second and ninth
floor were many floors and ceilings. Could he have experienced the
Faculty of the Divine Hearing?
In disbelief, he asked, "When I was asleep, did anyone go
up to the ninth floor?"
"No," they answered together. "We were here all
the time, did someone wake you?"
"No," Lian-chung replied.
"Tell me, has the accountant been selected?"
"It's Mr. Wu, who is my distant relative," Chang replied.
"He is very capable, responsible and reliable."
Lian-chung had already heard this when he was on the ninth floor.
Now, back on the second floor, the answers matched. Nevertheless,
he was shocked.
When Lian-chung went home, he lit an incense on his altar, in the
middle of which was enshrined a porcelain statue of the Holy Red
Crown Vajra Master. He then reported everything to the Master, and
chanted the Guru Heart Mantra and practiced the Guru Yoga. Lian-chung
believed he was able to hear the plot against him because he had
enshrined the Master's porcelain statue in his altar and, unknowingly,
he was protected by an invisible force, the Great Energy of Padmakumara
of the Western Paradise. Undoubtedly, the Bodhisattva was protecting
him, opening his divine ears at the right time; otherwise, he could
not have heard the secret conversation.
As a matter of fact, Lian-chung had intended to join the new business.
It would have been a very serious blow to him if the three other
partners were going to cheat him. That could have led to the loss
of his wealth or even his life.
He shuddered and was appalled by the ugly heart of people. It reminded
him of the incident when the original name of the school founded
by Master was stolen by a group of shameless people. Lian-chung
had worked very hard all his life for his trading company and it
could all have been lost. Thinking of this, he held the incense,
and thanked the Master over and over again for the mystical experience.
Since then, Lian-chung has sincerely chanted the Guru Heart Mantra
one thousand eighty times daily, even when he is walking, standing,
sitting, or lying down. He feels that Holy Red Crown Vajra Master
is miraculous and very compassionate.
Shortly thereafter, Master's reply arrived in the mail; it was
just a few simple but clear verses:
Beware of fraudulence this time,
Let not prosperity wither out;
Divinity will alert you,
Everything will become clear in the future.
Having read the verses, Lian-chung was deeply touched. He immediately
wrote a letter to the Master, detailing everything and his decision
not to join the new business, so as to avoid entrapment and ruin.
Later, according to a report from Lian-chung, the trio got another
innocent person to go in with them and they did away with him using
the same methods they had discussed using on Lian-chung. Lian-chung
once related this mystical experience to an eminent monk. The eminent
monk said that it was absolutely possible for someone to experience
a temporary Divine Hearing due to the intervention of Bodhisattvas.
It was the power of the Bodhisattvas that had transported the voices
of the conspiring trio to Lian-chung's ears, so that he could make
the right decisions regarding his future.
This eminent monk further affirmed that Vajra Master Sheng-yen
Lu is actually the transformation of a great Bodhisattva who uses
very special methods to salvage sentient beings; it is just that
ordinary cultivators do not quite understand him yet. Vajra Master
Lian Shen's knowledge of mystical Dharmas is enormous. He is a great
Bodhisattva who would sacrifice himself to save sentient beings,
which is very rare in our contemporary era.
This eminent monk is Lian-chung's teacher in the Sutrayana School.
Lian-chung has, altogether, four teachers, all of whom are quite
well-known.
