Chapter 28 - Cancer On The Neck
Everyone is afraid of death (except real acharyas). Sick people all desire to stay alive, as the survival instinct is one of the strongest of human instincts. It is sad when a patient with an incurable disease is informed by the doctors that there is nothing more they can do, especially when requests for continued treatment and hospitalization are turned down. Isn't this pitiful? Isn't this like a death sentence? Such was the case of a person, and the firm growth on his neck had already begun to bulge out. After the diagnosis, the doctors told him the cancer cells had already spread to the brain. The man could no longer move his neck. In extreme agony, he thought that death was his only resort. He knew that even the preacher of his church had died of cancer. Yet God! He despised it! He wouldn't believe it! While he was walking down the street, he happened to come across a Chinese bookstore. He walked inside and looked around. Strangely, one of the books seemed to have light coming out of it. He reached for this book and started reading it. It looked like a book about Tantra as well as philosophy. The book was A Little Taste of Zen. He would not believe in these things at all! What was this "Seven Days of Buddha's Bleeding," attaining happiness and release from suffering? It said if the practitioner had confidence it would eliminate bad karmas and sickness? And what was this "internal fire" practiced by Dr. Chieh Wen? It said that hepatitis, the hardening of the liver, could be cured and that one could become a completely new person. The vajra master in Seattle .. what was a vajra master? He did not understand at all. Why did Ph.D.'s and physicians take refuge in this vajra master? When the man saw the address in the book, he copied it down. Curious, he wrote a letter with only a few sentences: "When I saw your book, I felt good. A person who suffers from cancer, knowing that he is not far from death, hopes for protection or release from sufferings. I would also request an initiation empowerment from the vajra master." Soon after the letter was sent, the man dreamed he was walking into a big house where many people were listening to a preacher. That preacher had a golden body and was wearing a Five Buddha Crown. He looked magnificent. He was also the vajra master pictured in the book. That vajra master waved to him and said, "Lian-fan, your illness is the result of your previous life karmas! You must recite the Guru Heart Mantra. The Master will cure your illness." "Lian-fan" walked up in front of the master, who then smeared his neck with pure, clean water. Strangely, he felt cool and comfortable. The neck didn't feel as stiff and hard anymore. He was very grateful and knelt down immediately, bowing to the vajra master. At this point "Lian-fan" woke up. But, he still felt the pain on his neck and he had not been cured. He thought the dream was probably a reflection of his hopes. But, a strange thing happened again. He received his Certificate of Initiation and his refuge-name was exactly Lian-fan! On that same night, he had another strange dream. He again walked into the same big house where many people were listening to the vajra master delivering a discourse. The vajra master transformed until he was immensely tall and emitting golden rays of light. Lian-fan was kneeling down on the floor and sincerely bowing to the Master. He said to the Master, "The neck hasn't healed." The Master said, "You must chant the Guru Heart Mantra confidently." Again the master smeared his neck with pure, cool water. Once again, he felt very soothed and he woke up after that. Lian-fan thought, since he had already had the same dream twice, why not try to chant the mantra wholeheartedly? No matter what, it was better than waiting to die. So he determined to put everything else aside and, whenever he was free, he would chant the Guru Heart Mantra. He did it even when he was walking or riding in a car, both in the morning and at night. Strangely enough, after he started chanting, he was able to turn his neck. The bulge on his neck began to subside day by day. Finally one day, when he looked in the mirror, everything was back to normal. The date the doctors had surmised to be Lian-fan's last, passed and Lian-fan seemed to be recovering. His complexion changed from yellow and white to a lustrous pink. This was just like a fairy tale come true. He went back to the doctors for a checkup. The doctors repeatedly exclaimed that this was strange, the cancer cells were gone completely! The doctors just could not believe the mantra would cure the sickness. But Lian-fan was definitely cured. Lian-fan swore to himself that as long as he lived, he would be willing to contribute his strength to spread the Tantric teachings of the True Buddha School, telling people the good news of how he was cured and hoping other people would take refuge in the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master. The Guru Heart Mantra is able to supersede negative karma. This was another great miracle. Only a real vajra master has the ability to accomplish such miracles. Lian-fan is the "Lian-fan" who resides in Belgium.
