Chapter 24 - A Woman From Alaska
From the icy land of Alaska, an American woman, Melanie, came to Seattle to see a Chinese herbal doctor, Dr. Liao. Dr. Liao had been a Buddhist monk before he resumed household life and pursued a study in Chinese herbal medicine. At present, he runs a clinic in Seattle's Chinatown. Melanie had seen many western doctors, but they couldn't diagnose the reason for her infertility. Finally, she heard of Dr. Liao and came to see him. After an examination, which included an analysis of the patient's complexion and pulse, Dr. Liao couldn't find anything physically wrong either. He thought there was something strange about this. "You should go to see Master Sheng-yen Lu!" said Dr. Liao. "Who is Master Sheng-yen Lu? What can he do?" Melanie asked. "Your case is very special. It could be an illness of karma, a case of negative karma. I cannot help you here. I'll give you a phone number. It's Dr. Lu-sheng Chung's number. He is a student of Master Sheng-yen Lu. You can ask him to take you to see Master Lu. Master Lu will know the reason for your problem." So, Dr. Chung brought Melanie to see me. Once I saw her, I knew the problem. I held a vajra bell over her head and rang it three times. Melanie was puzzled. Dr. Chung asked me, "What's the matter?" I explained that Melanie had been pregnant three times before and had aborted the fetuses. The souls of these three fetuses had not left the body of the mother and had prevented other souls from entering the womb, thereby preventing further pregnancy. Due to their presence in the mother's body, Melanie also suffered from insomnia, unrest, fatigue, and strange dreams. Indeed Melanie admitted she had all these problems. She also admitted that she had had the three abortions. In America, abortion during the first trimester is legal and the practice of abortion is very common. Unmarried young girls have few alternatives other than abortions. So, in the States, clinics that specialize in abortions usually have a thriving practice. One should know that the souls of the three fetuses were water baby spirits. The three rings of the vajra bell were to draw them out. When the Master was ringing the bell, he was actually applying the Mahamudra Yoga and entering into the Samadhi of the True Void. Though his appearance was normal, the Master was actually concentrating his mind and accomplishing the yoga of summons. I could detect three rays of pale red light on Melanie. This was the light of the Hungry Ghosts Realm, one of the Six Realms (the lights of the Six Realms are as follows: Heaven-white; Asura-pale green; Human-pale yellow; Animal-pale blue; Hungry Ghost-pale red; Hell-black). So, from my forehead, I emitted a strong red light, which was not to chase away the three pale red lights, but rather to summon them to come to me. I prayed for the three Water Baby Spirits, "Why are you baby spirits wandering alone, away from all your friends and relatives? In this Universe there are other better and more beautiful places to stay. Do not dwell too long in the body of a mother in the Human Realm!" I prayed, "All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, please emit the great red light of compassion and drive away the fear of these three water baby spirits. Let all negative karmas retreat. The power of Holy Red Crown Vajra Master will eliminate all suffering." At this time, from the Universe itself, the power of compassion came swirling down and the pure red light led away the three water baby spirits. The Holy Red Crown Vajra Master is a great compassionate sage. His help for Melanie needed no return. The Master has always quietly and incessantly been doing the work of salvation. The pure light of salvation emitted by the Master is the Light of Samadhi from the Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. This is truly wondrous. It is important to know that the Light of Samadhi is generated from the turning of the Guru's Heart Mantra Wheel in the true Emptiness. If one's mind is not at peace, but racing with confusing thoughts, there will never be moments of quietness. According to the fixed karmas on such a person, there will be weak lights of the Six Realms appearing. If a Tantric practitioner who has taken refuge in the Master, recites the Guru's Heart Mantra every day, the Samadhi Light of the practitioner will become brighter and brighter, until it finally shines before the practitioner. Then he will be reborn in the Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. This is the result of one-pointed concentration of mind. The three water baby spirits, attracted by the pure red light, were led by the Most Supreme and returned to the Empty Space. Thus Melanie's body became purified. On March 22nd, 1985, Dr. Chung again met Melanie. And this time she was very pregnant. She was very grateful for his guidance. But Dr. Chung wanted her to thank Master Sheng- yen Lu and invited her to join us in our group practice. He wanted her to take refuge in the Master. She decided to take refuge as soon as possible and planned to move from Alaska to Seattle. On March 23rd, 1985, during our regular Saturday group practice, Dr. Chung talked to the group about his experience and his involvement in this incident, which truly exemplifies the power of Vajra Master Sheng-yen Lu. The incident reminds me that the Buddha Dharma is going to propagate in the world, especially the West. The Buddha Dharma is going to erect, in Seattle, a great world Dharma Banner. I could see that in the future, Seattle, like Tibet, would be a Buddhist teaching center. The True Buddha School is now established and it is going to flourish. In the future, I am going to establish the order of practices, such as the Three Studies (discipline meditation, wisdom), the Three Levels (of Teaching), the Six Perfections, Four Virtues, and techniques of Visualization, etc. I hope more people will benefit from this and achieve realization. With great compassion, determination and wisdom, the Padmakumara salvages sentient beings of all nationalities. His methods of salvation are sometimes announced, but he also performs many silent miracles. When there is need, there is help. This help is given completely, with delight and without hesitation. One after one, miracles happen. Can one guess how many more miracles have occurred silently? People should recognize this and generate their Bodhicitta to take refuge in the True Buddha School.
