Chapter 20 - The Mystical Experiences Of A Ph.D.
On the night of March 20, 1985 at eight o'clock in the evening,
two cars arrived at my residence. One belonged to Dr. Luo Cheng-fang,
from Oregon, the other belonged to Dr. Tseng Wen-ch'in, from Seattle,
a well known general practitioner.
Dr. Luo Cheng-fang, who holds a doctorate in forestry and chemistry,
brought several boxes of bowls and plates as presents to the Ling
Shen Ching Tze Temple, which is scheduled to be inaugurated soon.
After the opening of the Temple, visitors will come and meals will
be served.
Dr. Tseng Wen-ch'in, of Seattle, was extremely touched by my books.
He will be taking refuge in the True Buddha School and promised
to be the school's medical consultant. He would like to be the family
doctor for all True Buddha disciples and is willing to provide the
best medical services, including diagnosis, day and night service,
the answering of medical questions, treating physiological problems,
etc.. Doctor Tseng's intention to take refuge in the Holy Red Crown
Vajra Master Sheng-yen Lu was very sincere. Besides these two visitors,
there were also present the three brothers of the Chen family and
Mr. Hung T'ing Mao. So, we all sat around the table talking.
Dr. Luo Cheng-fang's refuge-name is Lian-chih. He received the
initiation empowerment on February l9th, 1984. After he went home,
he set up his altar and started his practices. He received substantial
psychic responses. Now his three channels are completely open.
Dr. Luo said, "Due to a mistake, I didn't receive any notice
of the July, 1984, Deliverance Ceremony, so I knew nothing about
it. During that time, quite unexpectedly, all my deceased ancestors
came visiting, one after another. My grandparents and parents also
came, and so did my uncles. Their sudden visits were a mystery."
Dr. Luo continued, "Since my communication with spirits was
not quite perfected, I felt that these deceased ancestors were pressing
on me, but I didn't understand why. They were very anxious and I
was ignorant of their intentions. I really didn't know what to do."
Dr. Luo learned that every year, on the last Saturday in the seventh
Lunar month, there is a Bardo Deliverance Ceremony held by the True
Buddha School. Unfortunately the ceremony was over by the time he
found out about it. Dr. Luo said, "Now, I realize they came
for the Bardo Deliverance Ceremony."
Dr. Luo's recent practices involved the use of thought power to
invoke his ancestors to line up in front of the Buddha. Then, he
visualized them doing the practice together with him and, afterwards,
he dedicated the merits to them.
Dr. Luo felt his ancestors were extremely happy. The spirits of
the ancestors received the joy of deep meditation and also the taste
of Dharma from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Only someone with real
spiritual contact would totally understand this kind of experience.
Dr. Luo said, "Only one ancestor did not come. He was no longer
in the spirit realm, so I couldn't invoke him. I knew about this
because the other ancestors told me so."
Dr. Luo has a relative who is a Zen practitioner. He did not understand
the power of Tantric practice but, whenever he meditated at Dr.
Luo's altar, he always felt the presence of a strong and incredibly
concentrated spiritual energy. In temples or any other place where
he meditated , he felt nothing like that.
Dr. Luo has started to teach the Buddha Dharma in Portland, Oregon,
and possibly will set up a local chapter. He will be receiving the
vajra teachings from the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master and, in the
future, become an acharya of the True Buddha School.
After listening to Dr. Luo, Dr. Tseng Wen-ch'in mentioned that
the American medical community had already started research on the
existence of consciousness after death. Some members have also started
to examine the questions of "resurrection" and "eternity."
Dr. Tseng said, "Life is short; the average life span of an
American is about seventy six years, therefore, reaching out to
eternity is most meaningful in life. In this respect, we must try
to achieve realization. Life, like that of the Holy Red Crown Vajra
Master's, is the most meaningful. Prestige and status are merely
temporary."
The evening's conversation was very memorable.
