Chapter 17 - A Wish
Lin Hsiao-jen, one of my students, is a sincere Tantric practitioner.
His refuge name is Lian-mo. He has had four gurus: the first was
Rinpoche Chiang; the second one was His Holiness, the Sixteenth
Gywal Karmapa; the third was Rinpoche Tseng-kang; the last was the
Holy Red Crown Vajra Master Lian-shen, the Tantrika. Lian-mo has
also taken refuge in a Sutrayana teacher, Dharma master Chu-yun.
In addition, he has taken the Bodhisattva Vows. A great supporter
of Buddhism, he has been a vegetarian for many years, recites sutras
and practices diligently.
His refuge name "mo" (literally silence) reflects his
personality. He is a reticent person, usually reciting the name
of Buddha quietly to himself. He works for a large company and is
honest with his work. Because of this, he was promoted to a supervisory
position. Due to his honest personality and his not knowing how
to brag and flatter, he had been stuck in this position for a long
time. He was regularly passed over whenever there was an opening
for the manager's position.
In June, 1984, the manager's position in the company was vacant
again and, according to seniority and work capabilities, Lin Hsiao-jen
should have been the pick among the four supervisors who were considered
for the position.
The other three supervisors had far less experience and were less
capable. Everyone started to congratulate him. However, the newest
of the other three supervisors was well-versed in social contacts,
young and slick, and had the trust of the director. So rumor spread
that this young supervisor had been secretly working to get the
new position and the director would most likely favor him.
After hearing the rumor, Lin Hsiao-jen went on quietly chanting
the name of Buddha and doing his work.
Everyone felt the company was being unfair to him, but they couldn't
do anything. When Lin Hsiao-jen went home, he started praying to
the Buddha, reciting the Diamond Sutra. He knelt down, bowing until
his knees were sore. With tears in his eyes, he recited the names
of Buddhas. He was grieved. His colleagues sympathized with him,
but it was useless.
Suddenly, he decided to seek help from the Master.
But, the Master was in Redmond, Washington, U.S.A. Sending a letter
would be too slow and it seemed rude to ask for help over the phone.
So he decided to take a four day holiday, fly to Seattle, and return
after one night's stay.
After Lian-mo made the decision, he called Redmond to make an appointment
to see the Master. The next day, he requested the four-day leave
and bought an airplane ticket.
Without a second thought, he boarded the plane, and flew to Seattle
via Tokyo. Because of his eagerness to see the Master, fatigue and
arduous travel did not bother him. He thought the Master must have
the ability and; the way to help him; he had full confidence in
the Master.
When the plane was flying above the clouds over the Pacific Ocean,
Lian-mo looked ahead and the destination seemed far away. Looking
back, the return was also full of uncertainties .... Lian-mo felt
a little dizzy and confused in the plane. All he could do now was
to continue on to where he originally wanted to go and just tell
the Master about his wish. He calmed down but wondered if the Master
would laugh at him and tell him that he was silly.
To pull himself together he kept chanting the name of Amitabha
Buddha and the Guru's Heart Mantra.
As soon as he saw the Master, he knelt down and sobbed.
"Everything is all right now." I said.
After I brought him to the True Buddha Tantric Quarter, he told
me the whole story.
"Do you have to be the manager?" I asked.
"It is a battle I cannot lose!"
Right away, I promised I would help him in this matter and would
perform a yoga for him. I put some fresh food into a container and
chanted twenty-one times the Food Transformation Mantra:
"Namosadpo Dandabiuda Pargeedi Om Sabolasabola Hum."
Then I put the container into the Pacific Ocean.
From the sky over the Pacific Ocean, there descended many Celestial
Beings to receive the offerings. I told them,
"This is the wish of Lian-mo. He hopes to become the manager,
please help him."
Chanting the Food Transformation Mantra and forming the corresponding
mudra will allow one to obtain amazing help from the Celestial Beings.
Because of their receipt of the offerings, the Celestial Beings
will help worldly beings to get what they wish.
This is one of the Wonderful Celestial Beings Dharma.
After his one night, Lian-mo went back to Taiwan.
On that same night, the director of Lian-mo's company had a strange
dream: sitting on an ocean was a sage, with a gem-umbrella above
his head that emitted lights of rainbow colors. The director bowed
to this sage, approached and requested guidance. The sage told him
that, to get all the benefits he wanted for his company, he should
have someone who was obedient and kind to look after his business.
"Where can I find such a person who is obedient and kind?"(Note:
Hsiao-jen, Lian-mo's real name, literally means "obedient and
kind" in Chinese.)
"Don't you have a person by the name of Lin Hsiao-jen in your
company?"
At this point, the director woke up. He felt such a dream was strange
and tried to figure out what it meant. It seemed to mean that the
sage wanted Lin Hsiao-jen to be the manager, so he told his wife
this. His wife replied that Lin Hsiao-jen had worked for many years
as a supervisor and should have been the manager long before. Although
he was serious in his work and honest, he did not know how to socialize,
so the director was not fond of him. But he never made a mistake
in his work. He was really the backbone of the company and should
be trustworthy enough for this managerial job.
After such a dream and after his wife reminded him, the director
started to feel that he had somewhat intentionally passed over Lin
in past promotions. He felt a little guilty. So he called Lin Hsiao-jen
to his office and told him that he would be the new manager. He
also told him about the strange dream he had had. After telling
Lin that he should do a good job, he told him that he would announce
his promotion in three days.
Lin Hsiao-jen is now the manager.
This true event proves that it is important to honestly believe
in the power of the Master and not be suspicious. If one recites
the Guru's Heart Mantra, one will be successful in what one sets
out to accomplish. This is an incredible, divine mantra!
Lian-mo's trip to Seattle resulted in a miracle.
The response of Bodhisattvas and the help of the Celestial Beings
are indeed genuine.
