Chapter 15 - Light From The Mala
Living in New York is a disciple by the name of Lian-shih (Hung-wei
Liao). When he saw a set of five magnificent mandala pictures of
Gurus, Personal Deities, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in a Gelugpa temple,
he liked it so much that he acquired five sets (a total of twenty-five
pictures) and mailed them to me in Redmond, Washington.
The five pictures were: Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Four-armed
Avalokitesvara (Kuan Yin), Cinta- mani Avalokitesvara, and Guru
Tsongkhapa. They were indeed extraordinary and magnificent.
At this time, another disciple from Chicago, Lian-pan (Pao-p'ing
Wei) came to see me. Lian-pan was going to set up a Tantric shrine
at home, so I gave him one set of the pictures to frame and hang
on the wall above his altar, to make it look more magnificent. At
the same time, I also gave him a mala, which I had especially empowered
by the following procedure: first I picked up the largest bead with
my right hand, then I coiled the mala three times around the four
fingers of my left hand, then transferred it to my right hand. To
empower it, I formed the Lotus Mudra and raised the mala above my
crown, while visualizing my body multiplying into a thousand. I
then recited seven times the following mantras:
"Om, namo svaha."
"Om, huai-lujia-na mo-la, svaha."
"Om, fa-ji-la gu-ha-ya ga-ba samaya, hum."
After this recitation of the mantras, one round of the mala (counting
the beads for recitation) is equivalent to having one thousand rounds
of the mala.
I told Lian-pan if he sincerely recited the Guru's Heart Mantra,
then evil would be turned to good fortune and he would be saved
in case of danger. This is because the Guru's Heart Mantra is the
ultimate, wonderful Dharma of the Great Sun Tathagata (Mahavairocana),
and is also the king of all mantras. It is a mantra of great luminosity.
With this mantra all evils will be chased away.
Lian-pan took the pictures and the mala back to Chicago. He set
up an altar and hung the mala on the wall. He took it down only
when he did his practice. Every day he recited the Guru's Heart
Mantra one hundred eight times or one thousand eighty times.
One day, Lian-pan's wife, Lian-c'hi, who was also a disciple of
the Master, went to pick up their child's birthday cake, which she
had ordered earlier from a bakery in Chicago's Chinatown. As she
was walking down the street, a speeding car made a left turn and
almost ran into her. In order to avoid running over her, the car
screeched loudly to a stop. Startled, Lian-chi was shaken and lost
her balance. As she fell down, she hit the back of her head on the
curb and was knocked unconscious. Luckily, someone at a nearby store
recognized her and immediately informed Lian-pan. When Lian-pan
arrived, he rushed her to the hospital. By this time, her face and
nails had already turned a darkish gray. The doctors tried to resuscitate
her.
While the doctors were trying to save her, Lian-pan didn't know
what to do. Suddenly, he thought of reciting the Guru's Heart Mantra.
He quickly went home and returned with the mala. By this time, his
wife's eyes had rolled up, and both her face and nails had turned
dark.
Shaking their heads, the doctors concluded that she had brain concussion
and that there was little hope. Holding the mala, Lian-pan calmly
and sincerely chanted the Guru's Heart Mantra-praying that the Buddhas,
Bodhisattvas and Master would save Lian-chi. When he came to the
third round of the mala, the dark color on Lian-chi's face and nails
started to recede. Her skin gradually returned to its normal, pinkish
color, and she finally woke up and was able to talk.
She told her husband: "I fell and blacked out and knew nothing
after that. I didn't even know if I were dead or not. After a while
I became aware of something. I saw a circle of very bright white
light in front of me. I looked closer and saw it was a mala that
emitted light. The mala was circling. The beads and the light made
me feel extremely comfortable and relaxed. It was just like going
from a place of darkness into a bright world. At the same time,
I heard the chanting of the Guru's Heart Mantra and, unconsciously,
I joined in and started chanting myself. Then I woke up."
"What did you see?" Lian-pan asked.
"Nothing, except the mala and the light."
"That's it, the Master has especially empowered this mala.
Since we have been chanting the Guru's Heart Mantra regularly, when
there was danger, this mala and the Guru's Heart Mantra acted as
a protecting charm releasing bright light. It saved your life. This
mala is really our life saver. It was the grace of the Buddhas,
Bodhisattvas and Master. We must thank the Master."
Another instance occurred. Lian-pan has a younger sister named
Hsiao-p'ings Wei, also living in Chicago. She suffered from migraine
headache. Once the headache started, she would be in terrible agony
and unable to move. Lian-pan felt pity for her and decided to chant
the mantra to help her.
One time, when the migraine attacked again, she was lying on the
bed groaning. Lian-pan lit an incense, begging the Master, Buddhas
and Bodhisattvas to empower him. He started reciting the Guru's
Heart Mantra for about two rounds of the mala. Then, he placed the
male on her head. Miraculously, the pain stopped. Not only that,
it never recurred. She had had migraines for more than ten years
and they occurred about seven or eight times a month. After her
brother's recitation, she was completely back to normal and did
not even have to take painkillers anymore. It was a miracle. Hsiao-p'ing
Wei promised her brother that she would come to Redmond to take
refuge in the Master.
It had been quite useless to get Hsiao-p'ing Wei to take refuge,
because she was a Catholic and had always opposed her brother's
belief in Buddhism. But, because of the miracle, she no longer opposed
him and she started to believe in the power of Holy Red Crown Vajra
Master Lian Shen. She wanted to come to take refuge herself.
The effectiveness of the chanting is not restricted to the Guru's
Heart Mantra. One can also recite the name of Amitabha Buddha or
Kuan-yin Bodhisattva. Chanting the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
has many advantages. It can eliminate negative karmas, enable one
to achieve one-point concentration of the mind, and accumulate unimaginable
merits. In the Pure Land sect, through chanting the name of Amitabha,
a practitioner is able to be reborn in the Western Paradise of Ultimate
Bliss, if he or she reaches a continual state of mindfulness of
Amitabha.
Chanting the name of Buddha is one of the best ways to liberate
oneself from sufferings.
I, the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master Lian Shen, the Tantrika, have
spent many years chanting the name of Amitabha, and have attained
a great amount of realization, from it. Although the current practice
is mainly Tantra, I still have not relinquished chanting the name
of Amitabha.
I am a practitioner in Taoism, Sutrayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.
