Chapter 10 - Seeking One's Fate

When I was in Taiwan, a high school teacher came to take refuge in me. I gave her the refuge name Lian lu.

Tall and healthy looking, Lian-lu was a beautiful woman.

She had long hair, sparkling and fascinating eyes, and a high-bridged nose. With a good job and a sweet face, one would think that she would have no problem in making a good marriage.

However, the school where she was teaching was a girls' school and she had only a few male colleagues. Besides, Lian-lu's standards were on the high side. She did not care for any of the men to whom she had been introduced. Thus she was unsuccessful in one way or another.

Her marriage did not materialize.

Once Lian-lu came to ask me when and where would her marriage occur? Using my divination method, checked carefully for her but, after several tries, was still unable to get a solid answer. It all looked very uncertain and distant. I told her honestly, there seemed to be no settling place for her in the world.

"Does that mean I have to become a nun?" She asks sadly, showing a row of white teeth.

"Not so," I replied. "Master! What should I do? Please, check for me once more."

This time, as I concentrated again and checked once more I saw a Japanese-made porcelain statue of Kuan-yin Bodhisattva, dressed in a kimono. It was the Kuan-yin that Lian-lu worshiped at home which was consecrated by me. This Kuan-yin Bodhisattva told me that Lianlu's fate was in America.

"America?" She gasped, amazed.

"Yes, Bodhisattva said so."

"It's impossible Master; I have no relatives in America and no reason to go there. At present, my chance of going overseas to study is zero. I have never thought of going to America," she said.

"But Bodhisattva, indeed, said so!"

In the summer of 1982, I immigrated to America. Lian-lu had not been in touch with me. She had not even written a letter to me. Then, in the summer of 1983, she sent me a card and a short note,

"Master, I am taking an opportunity this summer vacation to tour the United States and I will pay the Master a visit in Seattle."

That summer, I met Lian-lu at my old residence, the Sing Shen Attic. Wearing fashionable Western apparel, earrings and boots, she still looked very pretty. "Master, I have come!"

I was very glad to see her, too.

"Master, read my fate again. I am here in America!"

I carefully did a reading for her. Vaguely, I saw an ugly old man, his back slightly humped, his nose red, a Westerner of sixty or more years. When I saw this scene, I was surprised, but told Lian-lu exactly what happened.

"Do I have to marry this strange old man?" asked Lian-lu dejectedly.

I was silent.

The way things turned out surprised everyone. Lian-lu's female companion for the trip had to leave the States earlier than planned. While Lian-lu was dining alone in a restaurant, an old Westerner came and requested to share the table with her. The old man was indeed slightly lumpbacked and had a red nose. He was not handsome but very kind and friendly. The old man liked Lian-lu very much and they talked a lot. Lian-lu did not like him in the beginning, but discovered that he was very humorous and kind, so she was very happy to chat with him.

The old man took Lian-lu on a tour of the scenic spots and they became good friends, despite the great difference in age. The old man was sixty-four years old and Lian-lu was thirty.

"Master, you mean I have to marry this old man?"

"I am not sure, but you have indeed met him," I replied.

"My god! This is really my fate, an American fate?"

One day, the old man introduced Lian-lu to his son, who was a professor at a university in Arizona. He was thirty six years old and unmarried. His name was LoLa. Once introduced, LoLa immediately fell in love with Lianlu, and Lian-lu liked LoLa, too. Both seemed to fall in love with each other at first sight.

Now, Lian-lu finally was going to get married. They became engaged and were going back to Arizona to get married. LoLa was still teaching at the Arizona university. The old man was very happy with his son's choice of a wife.

Lian-lu said, "Master's divine reading is really amazing."

"It is a good thing that he didn't turn out to be the Hunchback of Notre Dame," I teased her. And she was overwhelmed with joy.

Lian-lu originally held a six-month tourist visa. She believed the Master's words, but she was aware of the slim chance of meeting her predestined husband in the vast populace of a country as huge as the United States. But, strange encounter and unexpected fate did indeed happen. This was truly a fated marriage.

The marriage effectively altered her status from a tourist into a permanent resident, and very soon she would get her citizenship.

A divine reading I made in my homeland of Taiwan finally became realized several years later overseas. This was unmistakably the guidance of the divine lights of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Such a miraculous prediction and wonderful encounter are achievable by the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master Sheng-yen Lu, the Tantrika. Lian-lu's realization of her marriage is great evidence. The divine reading of the Holy Red Crown Vajra Master is renowned all over the world. Recently, there were people from Europe, Singapore and Taiwan who flew over just to ask a single question, then flew back the next day. This is extraordinary.

I wrote a verse for Lian-lu:

The wonderful reading of Master amazes again,

Displaying supernatural powers at home and overseas;

Intricately fate brings the persons together, just like what happens in a drama,

And finally love comes her way.
