Chapter 25: The Spirit of a Loyal Dog
There was once a fodder factory located half way between the provinces
of Zhang Hua and Xi Hu. In front of the factory, the owner built
six buildings on an empty lot. These six buildings could be used
for shops, and upon completion were to be sold to individual businesses.
The owner of this property had raised a large hound dog for sixteen
years, and they established a very close relationship. Since the
hound knew the will of his master, he was very obedient to his master's
family. But when it came to outsiders, the hound would growl and
bare his sharp teeth to frighten them. Due to construction on the
property, the owner told the hound to guard the building materials
and the buildings. Unfortunately, before the buildings were finished,
the owner and his wife had to suffer from losing their faithful
dog, which passed away due to sickness and aging.
I did not know the owner of the fodder factory, nor did I even
know his name. However, while visiting him along with Mr. Chen Zheng
Xiong and Mr. Chen Ben Hui, I, with my extrasensory perception,
doubtlessly sensed the spirit of the loyal dog in every corner of
the entire house.
"Sir, have you ever raised a dog before?" I asked the
owner.
"Yes, I had a dog for sixteen years. We developed genuine
deep feelings towards each other, and it was a great pain to see
him parting to another world."
"Is it true that none of these six buildings have been sold?"
I asked curiously.
"That is correct. Sir, how do you know this?"
I told the owner of the fodder factory,
"The dead hound was very loyal when he was alive. When he
died, his spirit was reluctant to leave your family or to forsake
his primary duties of guarding the building materials and the buildings.
Therefore, whenever strangers who intended to buy the buildings
would come, the spirit of the big hound would use all his might
to bark at them or chase them away. Although the visitors were unable
hear the barking, they were able to sense a presence that made them
feel uncomfortable and restless. Having such unpleasant feelings,
they certainly, but for no legitimate reason, changed their minds
about buying the buildings. Consequently, none of the buildings
were sold.
While relaying the reasons behind the owner's inability to sell
his buildings, the owner, Mr. Chen Zheng Xiong and Mr. Chen Ben
Hui were all stunned. They probably felt as if they were listening
to some inconceivable fairy tales and thought me as the fairy tale
character.
Human beings have spirits therefore dogs also have spirits. I taught
the owner a method to pacify the spirit of the dog so that he would
be friendly and hospitable to prospective customers.
The loyalty, faithfulness, and responsibility of the dog were really
amazing. Human beings are proud of being the wisest of all creatures.
Instead of embracing the kindness to repay benevolence, they slander,
repaying ill will. Those who are unfaithful to their country and
ungrateful to benevolence do not even measure up to a dog.
