Chapter 8: Do Scandals Stop When They Get to a Wise Man?
When Shakyamuni Buddha was alive, he was accused of being involved
in many scandals.
Some people said that if the Buddha were to walk past a place,
husbands would follow after him to be ordained as monks; therefore
the Buddha was the creator of widows.
Some people said that if the Buddha were to walk past a place,
sons would follow after him to be ordained as monks; therefore the
Buddha caused family lines to come to an end.
Some people said that the cultivation centres at Bamboo Grove Park
and Jetavanna Grove were so exquisite because Shakyamuni Buddha
was misusing public money.
When Sundari¡¦s corpse was discovered abandoned beside
a cultivation centre, the murder was shrouded with mystery and doubt.
Some people thought that Shakyamuni Buddha would not be able to
extricate himself from implication in that murder.
Buddha Shakyamuni was pained by such accusations, but he remained
silent. He did not explain that scandals stop when they get to a
wise man. All he did was ask his disciples to tolerate and endure.
Today¡¦s media serve as information transmitters.
Television, the internet, newspapers, magazines etc. provide extensive
coverage of the news and transmit it to the whole world. However,
do these transmissions bring us the truth?
No. Some of the news is tainted with many falsehoods.
I personally believe that falsehoods will fall apart and come to
an end when confronted by a wise person. However, how many people
are wise enough to discern the truth? Out in the world, there is
nothing but whirling dust and mist.
If you were stop and think, you would realise that most people
in this society are blind ¡V they are totally spellbound by
the information disseminated by the media.
The media just needs to mention some scandal one hundred times
and it will be regarded as the truth. Even if a statement is totally
false, it will be taken as not far from the truth. For that reason,
scandals and the media are terrifying and horrifying. It is indeed
true that people¡¦s words are to be feared.
I have finally understood why Shakyamuni Buddha remained silent
and didn¡¦t explain each scandal. I am no longer in
doubt. It is because people in society are blind. To find a few
wise people is one difficult task!
